December 1962

(Continued from November 1962)

FANTASTIC FOUR  9
cover by Jack Kirby & Dick Ayers

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY  87
cover by Jack Kirby & Dick Ayers
"PRISONER OF THE REDS!"

from the GCD: "Synopsis: In order to solve the mystery of a rash of defecting American scientists, Dr. Blake uses himself as bait and is abducted by communists. He is imprisoned with the other missing scientists, but is able to transform into Thor and free them all."

JACK KIRBY continues cycling themes like clockwork, and this issue we're back on DIRTY COMMIES again!  I sometimes wonder if this world will ever put a stop to CRIMINAL elements either being in control of governments, or BACKING them behind the scenes, all for their own personal profit?  (Ironically, Russia seems to be cleaning up its act these days on that score, while America is in worse shape than ever.)

Larry Lieber & Dick Ayers continue on dialogue & inks.  This is the first episode not to be broken down into smaller chapters with separate titles.

STRANGE TALES  103
cover by Jack Kirby & Dick Ayers
PRISONER OF THE 5TH DIMENSION!

Synopsis:
Perfectly good houses sink into the ground after they're built.  Reed suggests sabotage; a farmer blames "swamp demons".  When Johnny investigates, he sees strange men with blue skin using an "electro gamma wave" ray gun to make the houses sink.  The farmer, confronted, proves to be one of them as well, and he uses an "anti-matter electron" gun to make Johnny's flame go out!

TRAPPED IN ANOTHER WORLD!

Synopsis:
Johnny is transported to another dimension, where, in a futuristic city, he's taken before Zemu, a despot who plans to conquer Earth, and had been trying to drive away the real estate developers from the dimensional passageway.  Imprisoned in a water tank, Johnny is freed by Valeria, whose father Phineas wishes to overthrow the tyrant.  Zemu's troops attack, threatening to kill the others if Johnny doesn't surrender.  But he frees his new friends...

THE END OF ZEMU!

Synopsis:
Johnny uses his flames to create a tornado to take out the asbestos-covered armored tanks, then writes a message in the sky to inspire an uprising!  Zemu is quickly overthrown, the people can now live free, and Valeria wishes Johnny could stay.  Back in school, Johnny daydreams about her, thinking "I'll never be able to get her out of my mind..." (Ah, so young!)

Indexer notes:
1st appearance of Zemu, Valeria & Phineas.  All 3 would return in FANTASTIC FOUR #158 (May 1975).
